Instructional Baseball

Instructional - Single A:

The A level consists of 7 & 8 year olds who will be placed on different teams in the A (Single A) division. Single A is predominately coach pitch, with some effort to introduce pitching to the players. The goal of Single A is to have fun and learn the fundamentals of baseball. The teams play 1 game a week (Thurs), participate in one "sandlot" game (Saturday), and have one practice or slills session each week.

Instructional - Farm:

The Farm level is the former Conley league, and consists of 5 & 6 year olds. There are no teams - Farm is skills focused and coach pitch, with one "sandlot" game (usually Wednesday), and one skills session each (Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning).

Cal Ripken

Cal Ripken Majors:

The Majors level consists of 11 and 12 year old players (5th, 6th, and 7th graders) who go through the placement process through which balanced teams are selected. All 11 and 12 year old players are asked to undergo the evaluation process, through which we will attempt to ensure that each player assigned is ready for this level of play. The teams play a 12 - 14 game schedule with 2-3 games (usually Tues, Thurs and sometimes Sun) and 1 skills/training/BP session or practice each week.

Cal Ripken Triple A:

The AAA level consists of select 10 and all 11 & 12 year old players who choose not to try out or who are not selected for a Majors team. Generally, 4th and 5th graders. Players will be evenly spread out among several AAA teams to create balanced teams. Our goal is that these players will have fun, work hard, and develop their skills both naturally and through the effort of the coaches. The teams play two games a week (usually Tuesday and Sunday) with a practice each week.

Cal Ripken Double A:

The AA level consists of 9 & 10 year olds who will be placed on different teams in the AA (Double A) division. Generally, 3rd and 4th grade, and all 3rd graders are eligible for AA, regardless of age. We endeavor to create even teams so that all games are as competitive as possible. Although we can’t be certain that some teams will win more than others, our hope is that each team is competitive with all of the other AA teams. The teams play two games a week (usually Monday and Sunday) with a practice each week.

Travel Baseball

Travel baseball will be available for ages 9 through 12. The travel program will provide an additional schedule of games (on top of in-town play) during the spring as well as coach-led, team-based practices. Competition will be predominantly provided by like-minded, neighboring communities such as Lexington, Weston, Concord-Carlisle, Acton, Burlington, Waltham, Medford, and Winchester. Participating leagues will vary by age group, however, and are subject to change - BYBS will make decisions in early January as to the number of teams to field and which leagues to join, for example: the local travel league or AAU.

It is our goal to create “like competition” across all age groups so that everyone is playing and playing where they should be. Do not get caught up in which team your child makes! All players develop at different rates - the best player in any age group will not be the best player in the future - it happens all the time. It is most important that they are practicing a lot and playing the game, and having fun doing it.

Also, it is a simple fact that enrollment (i.e. numbers) can create difficulties in team placement. If, for whatever reason, we cannot find the appropriate place for your son or daughter on a travel team, he/she will be selected as an alternate, but the entire travel portion of the bundle will be refunded. We will, of course, do everything we can to avoid this scenario, and have always been successful in doing so.

Remember that the travel program is for those players who are truly passionate about baseball. At BYBS, we wholeheartedly support participation in multiple sports, and we always work to create schedules that help to facilitate that, but please recognize that Travel players will participate in 6 to 8 baseball-related activities (skills, practice, or games) each week during the Spring.

Babe Ruth

Players who are between the ages of 13 and 15 (7th through 9th grade) are eligible to play for Belmont teams in the Arlington-managed Babe Ruth Baseball League (ABL). The ABL has teams from many local towns who will play games on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and/or Sundays against other teams from the local area. The season begins in early April and ends at the end of the school year. Players up through 9th grade who are 15 years old or younger by April 30th are eligible to play. Tryouts will be held before the season to assign players to teams in either the A or B division. There is a summer session of Babe Ruth as well.

Baseball Skills/Clinics

We will offer skills program for players of all abilities between the ages of 6-15 throughout the year, especially in the summer. The focus will be on practicing the skills of baseball. Run predominately as a baseball clinic, players will rotate through various stations designed to teach the skills of hitting, pitching, throwing, fielding, and baseball situations.
