Overview:
Belmont Youth Softball offers spring softball for girls from kindergarten through 9th grade. Our youngest players at 6U (K & 1st) start with learning fundamental skills through our in-town program. Players then move to 8U and 10U travel teams that compete in the CityTown League (CTL) with all ability levels. At 12U and 14U, teams continue CTL league play with increased competitive focus to prepare for high school ball. New players are welcome at any grade, no tryouts required. In addition to learning the game, BYS promotes camaraderie, sportsmanship, and fun! Players develop skills, build confidence, grow friendships, and learn to work as a team.
The CTL includes Arlington, Belmont, Cambridge, Charlestown, Medford, Somerville, Waltham, Watertown, and Winchester, so that's the extent of travel for away games. Most games are held on weekday evenings. Practice days for the Spring 2026 season TBD as BYS navigates field space availability while the Chenery fields are under renovation.
The BYS spring season officially starts in April and concludes in mid-June with a fun Skills Night competition and celebration. In the off-season, BYS families are kept informed about clinic and skill-building options, along with opportunities to participate in summer and fall ball and other year-round play.
Age Divisions, Schedule and Registration:
USA Softball updated its age cutoffs for league divisions in 2024, and they now align with school cutoffs in our area. This means BYS teams are largely organized by grade levels so kids get to play with classmates and friends. Use the chart below to find your division, from 6U-14U.
Schedule Commitment:
- While the BYS softball program typically does not require weekend commitments (with the exception of 14U games), for the 2026 spring season this may vary due to field space constraints given the Chenery fields renovation. League games will continue to be held on weeknights (see below) but practices for all divisions may be scheduled on one weekend day - tbd.
- Final schedules and field locations for practices and games will be shared by team coaches at the start of the season.
6U - In Town Only - Kindergarten / 1st grade
Practice: Weekday Evening - TBD
Focus is on the fundamental skills of softball and building hand/eye coordination, ending with a scrimmage and fun relay race.
8U - 2nd / 3rd grades
Practice: Once/week (TBD)
Games: Twice/week (Tues & Thurs 5:30 - 7:30pm)
Learn the basics of the game with coach-pitched real games played twice a week against other towns. Additional practice is held once a week.
10U - 4th / 5th grades
Practice: Once/week (TBD)
Games: Twice/week (Mon & Wed 5:30-7:30pm)
Umpired games 2x/week, and 1 additional practice. Local travel and competitive FUN team spirit starts now! Positive competitiveness is cultivated and confidence starts to build as players improve skills and learn the game. Pitchers transition to real game scenarios where batters walk after 4 balls (as of 2026, the league has eliminated coach pitch at this level.) Former college pitchers and our own BHS softball team assist as knowledgeable resources to help learn the fundamentals of pitching. Additional pitching practices will be held weekly.
12U - 6th / 7th grades
Practice: Once/week (TBD)
Games: Twice/week (Tues & Thurs 5:30 - 7:30pm)
Umpired games 2x/week, and 1 additional practice. Team growth, knowledge of the game, and individual skill development are more evident at this level as players prepare for higher levels of competition. Team camaraderie and sportsmanship remain a main focus and local travel continues.
14U - 8th / 9th grades
Practice: Once/week
Games: Twice/week - likely doubleheaders on weekends
Umpired games 2x/week, and an additional practice. Working with the high school coach to build the foundation of a competitive Varsity program, this team serves our town as a Junior BHS feeder team.
